We bought our 5 year old a motorcycle.

HA! How's that for a title to a post?!?

We actually, DID NOT in fact buy our 5 year old a motorcycle, but we might as well have.

Let me back up a bit...

Celia was ready for a new wheelchair. For those of you who don't know how insurance works for expensive medical equipment like wheelchairs, you get one approved every 3-5 years.

So choose wisely, 'cuz you're going to have it a LONG TIME.

Last fall, we went  to a seating clinic and we found a wonderful chair that sits on a stroller base.

OR....

A power base.

You see where I'm going with this now don't you???

I was initially TOTALLY AGAINST a power wheelchair for several reasons:

1) Our house is full of furniture to navigate and there really isn't open spaces for her to go anywhere.

2) I don't want to be the crazy lunatic mom chasing my daughter as she zooms down whatever aisle that strikes her fancy at Target.

3) We didn't have a scooter hitch to take the thing anywhere and it weighs almost 200 lbs.

4) We don't have ramps to get in and out of our house and have brick steps, so building said ramps would be difficult and well, tacky.

There. I said it.
Tacky.

So, anyhoo....

I left the appointment with a Otto bock Mygo seat on a stroller base ordered and felt very justified in my decision.

Came home and the more we talked about it, the more we realized that we are breaking a cardinal family rule.

CELIA GETS TO TRY.

Anything and everything.

Its our rule that we always fall back on.

We don't know what the next 3-5 years may hold for our sweet girl, and she may not have the strength then to use a power chair. We just don't know. And right now, she is strong enough.

So I called the Rep back and told him to order the power base instead.

Fast forward 7 months, and last Friday Celia's new wheels FINALLY arrived.

We put her in it, got the controls set up for her to drive with her foot, and she EFFORTLESSLY pushed our sofa across the room and into the wall while 3 adults chased after her to no avail.

On her very first attempt to drive.

Pretty impressive, is it not?

Ahem.

Since then, we have taken her OUTSIDE to practice her mad driving skills, maneuvers and I have to say from the depths of my heart....

WHAT IN GOD"S NAME WERE WE THINKING?!?!?!?!

She is five years old and she is careening out of control driving a POWER chair.

Emphasis on the word POWER.

For as smart as my little monkey is, she is equally mischevious. Seeing her mom's terrified look has brought out the C-R-A-Z-Y G-I-R-L in her.

I see the twinkle in her eye as she makes a bee-line for the dog.

If she wants me and she is across the street with Daddy, no problem.... Curbs, trees, bushes, small animals, anyone's toes and not one of her siblings will not deter her from her mission.

Lord, help us all.

To say that we are out of our league here is an understatement.

I have subsequently waved the white flag of surrender and we have actually hired a physical therapist who will come weekly to teach Celia how to not kill anyone navigate safely.

Right now, that stinkin' thing is sitting in my garage.

Thankfully, we also were given the stroller base that we can use until she turns 16, until we get a few lessons under our belt.

So, if you happen to be at T@rget and you see a flash of PINK go by, and hear cackles of laughter while a harried mother and 3 sisters run after,  screaming, "CELIA STOP!!!" that'd be us.

Feel free to help me catch her.
 PrettyPleaseWithSugarOnTop.

Thank you in advance.
