4weeks/$25

My son is planning to go on a trip to East Asia in a few weeks to *help* in orphanages and *take college classes* to get to know college students- You know those kind of trips, right? His inspiration for this type of trip resides in our home :)

Anyhoo, his dad and I pledged an amount to help him,and so many others have generously given, but he is still too short and is leaving in 3 weeks. I was praying about it one day, and because I am a homemaker now, I was praying specifically for a way that I could help him reach his goal...

The thought came to me that I could give him my grocery $$ for a month. I have become a great coupon shopper and I have created quite a stock pile of things I have paid next to nothing for.. ( My BEST trip was last week when I spent $64 for $244 worth of groceries!! That is a 84% savings- WOOT!) But could it last us for a month?

So the plan is, that I will get $25 a week for milk, eggs and a few fresh fruits and veges. I think we can do it.

To match my pledge, Ryan is also spending the next 3 weeks not eating out, not going to St@rbucks, not buying bottled water, and he can add what he has saved as well.

It still is not enough to get him to go, but it does get him into the doable range.

And it got me thinking.... Why don't I try to do this several times a year? There are so many people serving in missions across the globe. There are so many needs, and how can I, sit in my home with my stockpile of grocery bargains and not do something?

Don't get me wrong, my goal is to donate 2 bags of groceries a week to our local food pantry, and most weeks I do. We support children in China, and we look for ways to help those in need that cross our path. But the need is SO MUCH bigger than that.

Read the last fews posts of my cyber friend Vashti who is a missionary in South Africa. Or THIS blog of people still serving the earthquake victims in China. They are currently looking for donated medications.

Please prayerfully consider what your family can do to give. Somewhere. Anywhere.

  1. Awesome post! It is SO EASY to make a difference, people just need to step out and be creative or take a risk. My friend has been baking cupcakes and cookies and taking them out selling them to raise money for us....its really that easy isnt it?!
