100 Days of school paarrtay!
We started second grade for Aria at the end of February primarily because she completed first grade in about 6 months, and summer break seemed a little too early to start in March.
I thought we would do a dvd program (to slow her down a bit) and decided to give Gianna a chance for K4 dvds as well.
Then in March, we were surprised by TWINS( which is EXACTLY like a surprise pregnancy, except not really) and I made a semi-executive decision to try to get the whole year completed before we travel for the twins somewhere, oh, around October- December. How's that for helping me plan an ENTIRE school year?
Since we start in August with Art, and Geography classes and then Science Club begins in September, we worked REALLY hard, (and even added a few Saturday school days) to get to the point where we can do three days a week from August till December. Never fear, Tuesday classes and Friday classes count for schooling, so we are just not coming home and doing MORE SCHOOL. Can I get an AMEN??
Then we are taking our summer break in the winter, and working again through next summer. Ahh, the beauty of homeschooling!
Anyhoo, yesterday was our ONE HUNDREDTH day oftorture, I mean, schooling, so we decided we needed to break up our monotony with a party.
We started with my lame attempt at a "100" breakfast. I was planning for sausage and silver dollar pancakes, but when there were no sausages left in the freezer, I improvised with a Nutri-grain bar.
Gianna was a little disturbed, and kept asking why she had a "bar" with pancakes.
Sigh. I tried.
Being the time scheduled mommy that I am, I actually made them school first before the party.
I know, I know... cruel and unusual.
Aria didn't seem to mind, thank goodness.
We sorted pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters to see what 100 of each coin would count up to.
It may or may not have also helped Daddy to be able to roll them, but it was never my intention to make a game out of more work. Nah, never. ;)
We had Gianna put 100 stickers on a board to see what 100 stickers looks like.
I never said creativity was my strong suit.
And although it looks strangely similar to giving a 4 year old busy work, she actually counted to 100 and got all her stickers on there.
We thought of 50 people and 50 things we are thankful for. That was fun. Aria said she was thankful for "the cleaning ladies". She is a girl after her mama's own heart.
We made 100 cheerios necklaces, ate them, tried to cut a pan of brownies into 100 pieces- gave up and ate them too, we thought of 100 foods we like, and called it a day.
In the end, although simple and not overly creative, it was a really fun day.
Now back to the grindstone- only 80 more days to go and we are DONE!!!

Sounds pretty creative to me, Cristy! Also like a lot of work (but fun-work!). There are definite advantages to home-schooling...and I would think doing school in the summer is not such a bad idea with the heat...
ReplyDeleteBlessings to you and your family.
Betty
What fun! We start our school year on Monday, August 2. Let the fun times roll!
ReplyDeleteI guess it never really occured to me that home school had to have a certain number of days. I just thought you had to get a certain amount of work done. See even a gran'ma can learn. I am so proud of my wonderful energetic granddaughters, they are such a blessing. Keep on homeschooling Mom, you have made me a believer in your system!!!
