Celia's First Day of School

Woke up at 6 AM.
Did ya'll know it's DARK then?
Let's just say the sun is shining when I usually wake up, and leave it at that.

Got the girls up at 7 AM.
Aria and Gianna decided to sleep in their clothes so they would get 5 more minutes of sleep.
Waking my little sleeping cherubs goes against the first rule of motherhood.
NEVER, EVER WAKE A SLEEPING BABY.

Rushed out the door at 7:10 with...
No coffee.
A camera without a SD card (unbeknownst to me at the time)
Four whining grumbling kids.

Drove to school with the girls complaining "how early it is" while lecturing them on the REAL WORLD of non-homeschoolers and how they actually have to get up early and stay all day at school, and then, GASP, come home and do homework.
It worked.
They decided one or two trips to Celia's school wouldn't kill them.

Got to Celia's school and the drop off system is a JOKE.
Everyone has to bring their children in, so they park in every place imaginable, including places that are blocked off with NO PARKING signs clearly posted.
Guess they didn't have their morning coffee either.

Waited in the foyer for her teacher and saw:
A 400 lb woman who ripped her jeans to expose her entire thigh as a fashion statement.
You're welcome for the mental picture.
A woman in her PJ's and slippers that she bought in 1975, and had not had time to wash them since then.
A woman yelling at the receptionist.
A child throwing the mother of all temper fits as his mom left him outside and continued down the hall to drop off a sibling.
With cars 4 feet away.
Oh, and my favorite-a child with OPEN SORES all over his face and hacking up a lung walking to his class.

I had the sudden urge to RUN as fast as I could with four kids in tow.

When her teacher finally made it to me, I had firmly decided that we weren't staying.

BUT, her teacher is amazing. The little boy (the only other child in her class) was sweet.
She had speech and PT scheduled for today.
She seemed happy to be there.
She didn't cry when I went back to the car for her tray for her chair, so I decided I would leave her.... just this once, you know, to be nice and all.

Her teacher emailed me to let me know she ate for her (BIG DEAL- she eats for very few people) and that she was happy and smiley and talking.

What her teacher didn't know was, I was sitting in the parking lot when she emailed. HA.
Or maybe she did know and was trying to get rid of me.
Hmmmm.....

Either way, I hovered in the general vicinity and was back at 10 AM SHARP for a 10:45 pick-up.
Timeliness is next to Godliness after all.

I had a nice chat with her PT who, said Celia loved the mirror (so she's vain, so what?!?) and told her "Walk" so they did. Those are typical Celia behaviors so I knew she felt comfortable. She also said she smiled and talked to her. All good signs.

Then I peeked into her classroom, and she was out of her wheelchair sitting in the teacher's lap and playing with her new little buddy.

She got to paint, and play playdough and she was HAPPY when I picked her up.

Darn. I mean, GREAT. Just G-R-E-A-T.
I guess that means she'll go back on Wednesday.

If this Mama's heart can stand it.

  1. I'm glad she had such a good experience. The little things mean so much.

  2. You're braver than I am. The farthest I've gone from my daughter so far, outside our home, is to let her go upstairs at church and watch a video with the kids while the women met downstairs.

I did check out our public school just to be diligent, but it was so grey and filthy in the classroom and old that I knew homeschooling was definitely for us.

  3. I cringe a little every time I take Moriah to preschool at our local public school. She is in a great class that has benefited her in many ways. And she loves it...but I totally relate to your mixed emotions about it. I would never have considered preschool (or school away from home) when my others were small, but parenting her is a different ball game all together. I admire your strength in seeking to provide what she needs...not just what makes you the most comfortable. Hurray for Celia and her first day of school!!

  4. Good job, Celia! You are off and running with the best of them. Thanks for putting all your mom's worries at ease. You have made all of us very proud of you on your first day at school. You're gonna go far in this organization!
