Guess what today is???

Here in steamy Hotlanta, we quickly run out of things to do in air conditioning during the summer. So last week, THIS came in the mail, and well, Aria was MORE than a little excited.

We decided to go ahead and begin our school year this week. Aria has been counting down the "sleeps" until she could start school.

Last night we made a HUGE deal out of a trip to W@llmart, and stocked up on crayons, paper, colored pencils and school boxes. We went down the backpack aisle, and she RAN to a Princess backpack, and "ME TOO" ran to a Dor@ backpack. Then they proudly walked around the store carrying their school boxes and wearing their new backpacks. Oh, how I wish I had a camera!

After the girls went to bed, we transformed the downstairs playroom into a school room.  We took out the extra toys, added a TV for the video program, put name tags on their table and hung their empty backpacks on their chairs.

We were all so excited about starting. Sweet Ryan even left a message on the chalkboard for Aria since he left before she got up.
She woke up raring to get started on her first day of 4 year old kindergarten! She quickly got dressed and ran to see the new school room transformation.

She couldn't wait to see the school room and giggled all the way!
Heading outside with our backpacks for the photo shoot.

We headed back inside pop in the first DVD, to sing and listen to a Bible lesson.
Going well, still enthusiastic, and following the video teacher precisely.

Then we pop in the phonics, and things went downhill. Very quickly.
The teacher spent almost 10 minutes explaining that every one has a name, and every letter has a name. Aria listens quietly for about 3 minutes and then says, "Look Mommy she has an uppercase I, a lower case i and the word sit is written on the board. But  the letter i can say it's name, or it can say it's short sound ."

I purchased the 4 year old program based on the recommendation of the school, and I told them she has been reading since she was 3 1/2. As I flipped to the end of the books, I realized that they were just beginning to blend words.
SOOO, we turned off the video and ended for the day.  What a bummer for my excited girl!

Since she would be totally bored, I called the school, and for a fee, I could switch to the 5 year old program, which should be more challenging. Which will be in the mail today.

What a let down!!!

  3. Poor Aria! She is such a sweetie. Thanks for the info on what is at that grade level since Mr. Sheridan has begun to read. He would have been bored by what that teacher was saying and he's a year younger than Aria!

  4. Now that is too sweet!

Sounds like you have a little brain in your class.

  6. Wow. Watch out - she's a smart one!
She does need phonics, but sounds like she's ready for the blends and for the 'harder' rules.
    I'll send you some links.

  8. You should have started with trigonometry. She was helping Dad with polynomials a few months ago. Im pretty sure that she has that down now.
