Admitted.

Celia was admitted to the hospital on Monday after a HORRIBLE, AWFUL Sunday that I'd rather forget.

I was on the phone with my Ped's office and the Dr on call was very wonderful, but thought she could stay home and be seen in the office when they opened on Monday so we went that direction.

Keeping her away from germs is a serious business, as is knowing when to go to the ER.
In hindsight, we should've gone to the ER, but we didn't know.
Lesson learned.

By Monday, we were giving her fluids every hour in her g-tube, but we had no wet diapers to show for it. We had a little girl with a fever of 103, dehydrated, and choking on her own phlegm as well as severe coughing fits that left her exhausted.

Our Dr was not in Monday, but thankfully the Dr we had spoken to on Saturday and Sunday was. She gave her a shot of rocephin ( a very strong antibiotic) to cover our bases and told me if we didn't have a wet diaper by 2 PM, to head to the ER.

In the meantime, we called her pulmonary doctor to have her look at the xrays from Saturday's ER trip. She called back and said that Celia had "hyper inflated air pockets" in her lungs and we needed to get her to the hospital, that she would be admitted upon arrival.

So off I go, while my sweet husband held down the fort at home, and cared for the other 3 recently sick-but-getting-better children. Doing all the laundry from the rough night we had, remembering the girls medicines, and feeding everyone. Oh, and trying to work too. Gosh, I love that man!

The ER Dr this go around was F-A-B-U-L-O-U-S. He totally understood mito-kids and that they cannot be treated like other children. He was furious that the ER Dr from Saturday did no labs, no urine cultures, and just wrote a prescription and sent us home. He quickly ran all sorts of tests, and her new chest xray looked worse that the one taken on Saturday so that bought her a trip to the fourth floor.

We now know that she has RSV (a respiratory virus that is like the common cold for you and me, but NOT for mito kids) and probably has a serious bacterial infection as well. Since her fever left a few hours after the rocephin shot, they think she has multiple things going on. Add dehydration to the mix and she was very, very concerning.

She is still in the hospital and we hope she will come home tomorrow if all goes well.

She gets a fun little home suctioner to help her in times like these, as well as a host of new medications.

I am so thankful for all the prayers from those of you who knew, as well as the coffee run from my dad and all my friends and sister who were willing to help us in any way.

Every single Dr we have seen here has used the "f" word when referring to Celia.
Fragile.
It feels like frigid water being poured down my back each and every time we hear it.
Reality stinks in words like that.

Anyway we are hopeful that she may come home tomorrow, and since we never want her to ever be this sick again,  we may keep her in the house until Spring 2012.

Good plan, eh?

  4. Praying she will be well enough to go home today and be able by God's grace to stay well for a long, long time. She shouldn't have to suffer like this and hope and pray she will never have another bout like she has just gone through. We love you!
