Feed the Bed
I thought of "Sleep Deprived Part 3" but then who would really believe I would devote three whole posts to our sleep (or lack thereof)???
So, instead, I thought I'd tell you what tubies (a fun term for our g-tube dependent girl) call "feeding the bed"
We woke up at 5 AM this morning as usual to turn off her pump.
She was sleeping peacefully........
......in a puddle of formula.
How that does not wake her up, I have yet to discover.
She somehow disconnected the whole entire tube from her button and was pumping the formula all over her, the bed, the floor, etc.
It's never a good thing when I hear a frantic "HONEY!!" over the nursery monitor.
On the most FREEZING morning of the year, we tag team the sheets change, the crib and floor clean up and the baby bathing.
Sigh.
We have tried literally every scenario for this not to happen, taping her tubes to her, not taping, running them down her leg through her PJs, running it out the side- YOU. NAME. IT... We've tried it.
And I have come to the conclusion, that "Feeding the Bed" will be with us for some time to come.
A few nights ago, she got the tubes wrapped and disconnected it, and somehow feed the carpet behind her crib with just a small damp spot on her sheets.
Thankfully, it was at 11PM when I went in to check her, and we are smarter now than a month ago, or I might have left the room without checking all her leads, and had the formula dripping into the room below all night.
SOOOOOO,
If she keeps her arms and legs safely in the crib at all times,
AND,
doesn't bang her head against the bars,
AND,
doesn't crocodile death roll to attack her feeding tubes,
OR,
get them wrapped around her neck,
AND,
doesn't roll over in such a way that crimps the line and sends alarms blaring,
AND,
doesn't feed the bed, requiring baths and clean-up,
AND,
no one has bad dreams,
wets the bed,
has to go potty,
or wants a drink,
Then my rough estimate is, that we just *might* be able to get a good night's sleep once every 365 days.
Not-so bad, right??
**And this will commence my three post saga of sleep deprivation. I'm sure you all will miss the on-going sordid details of laundry and baby bathing at ungodly hours of the night.

Oh Honey. Will insurance pay for the occasional night nurse? When things settle down here maybe I can come for a night and at least take some of it off your hands !!!!
ReplyDeleteBless your heart! We have fed many a beds over here as well! We invested in a good rug to save the carpet. That formula is so nasty and sticky. Ewww! Wish I could help you out somehow, I suppose laughing at your stories is no help though! How about prayers? That I can do!
ReplyDeleteAlright, this is getting pretty bad. Can you swaddle Celia like a newborn? Surely there is something short of a straight jacket that would be cozy and safe for her?
ReplyDeleteAny way you can increase feedings during the day and decrease the amount of hours at night, that way you can get some sleep and hopefully not as much surprises when you go in there, seeing that she is not getting the full amount at night because of the disconnects.
ReplyDeleteSeems to me someone must have the solution to this, the swaddling idea sounds pretty good, but I can't see Celia going for it. Prayer is the one positive answer, so we are going to pray for an answer. Love and kisses, see you soon.
