Too good not to share

I have a weird little secret.
I have been making my own laundry detergent for several months now.
And I LOVE IT!!
It gets your laundry every bit as clean as store-bought detergent, and
are you ready for this??
You use just 2 tablespoons of the mixture.
So it lasts F-O-R-E-V-E-R.
Even if you are a laundry maniac like me and do 2-4 loads per day.
AND it costs like a penny a load (or thereabout)

Here are the cast of characters:

1 box Borax
1 Box Washing Soda
1 box Baking Soda
1 3 lb oxy clean type stuff
4 bars of Fels Naptha grated (I know, I know, I only show one.)
1 canister of Downey Unstoppables (not necessary- I just like the way it makes my laundry smell)
Total is about $21 at Wal-mart and all of these items are right in the laundry detergent aisle.

So you grate the 4 bars of soap (you can use Ivory soap as well) using a fine grater.

Then mix all the powders and soap and unstoppables together.
I usually dump it all in a trash bag and mix it well with my hands and then scoop into containers.
I have also used the cuppa' this, cuppa' that method.

Here is the results- and remember you only need a mere 2 tablespoons for perfectly clean laundry.
It takes about 10 minutes to make  this batch that will last for months and months.

*Oh, if you have an HE machine like I do, you can use this recipe. I just dump the detergent over the clothes and bypass the soap dispenser.

So what are you waiting for?!?

  2. How funny - yours is the second blog I've read this week with this same topic. I like fels naptha better than the ivory soap though. Can't stand the smell of Ivory soap.

  3. With all that you have going on, you took the time to post this. Thanks for the directions and pics. Kim told me about this a long time ago but I may actually try it although I may be the first person to mess it up!

  4. I have seen several similar recipes lately. However, yours is the first where you didn't have to melt the soap and store it as a liquid. I hated the thought of having gallons of gooey liquid around, but the powder mixture I could totally do. I also like the idea of the good-smelling Downey and the Oxy clean. I think I'll try it! Thanks for sharing. I already do a ton of laundry, and I will soon be doing laundry for eight. So the timing is just right!

  5. Incredible! We don't see how you do it. With all that you have going on you can find time to make washing powder. You are the epitome of efficiency! No wonder the girls always smell so fresh and clean.

  6. I am going to try this. Most of these ingredients are more natural, too, than store bought detergents. Thanks for sharing! Heres to clean clothes!!!

  7. I just made it yesterday, thanks for sharing! My last batch was the Duggar's recipe, and you use basically the same ingredients, but melt it all down and make liquid detergent. Think I like the dry better.
Hey, how did you grate your soap? That was the most exhausting part, because I only have hand-held graters and it took foreeeeever.

  9. Cristy, I've been doing this for awhile too! Works great, fun to make and saves a bundle! Try putting the soap in a food processor...alot faster than doing it by hand!
